A true contemporary issue watch, the Tudor Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale was designed to meet the operational requirements of French combat swimmers. Produced over a very short period with the engraving M.N.21, this first series embodies the purest and most sought-after form of the FXD.

The story

The relationship between Tudor and the French Navy represents one of the most solid and well-documented chapters in 20th-century military watchmaking. It officially began in 1956, when the Groupe d’Étude et de Recherches Sous-Marines (G.E.R.S.), a scientific unit attached to the French Navy and based in Toulon, received several Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner watches to be tested under real-life conditions. At the time, the requirements were clear: to rely on instruments that were reliable, highly legible and robust, capable of accompanying military divers in demanding environments, without depending on fragile technologies or experimental solutions.

The first reports were unequivocal. Water resistance was deemed “perfect,” overall performance “entirely satisfactory,” and legibility met operational expectations. On the strength of these results, Tudor was officially appointed supplier to the French Navy in 1961, initiating a collaboration that would endure for decades. For many years, French military divers wore Tudor watches as true issued instruments, delivered without bracelets and later adapted to field conditions by the units themselves.

Over the years, numerous Tudor Submariner references accompanied the French Navy’s combat swimmers and diving schools. Iconic models such as the 7922, 7928, and later the 7016 illustrate a constant evolution driven by real-world use. At the end of the 1960s, at the explicit request of the Navy, Tudor introduced Snowflake hands and square hour markers to improve legibility in low-light conditions—elements that would later become among the brand’s most recognisable signatures.

From the mid-1970s onward, reference 9401, recognisable by its blue dial and bezel, established itself as the most emblematic Tudor dive watch used by the French Navy. These watches featured the famous “M.N.” engravings on the case back, followed by the year of issue—originally a functional marking that has since become a major symbol for collectors. Although production ceased in the 1980s, their use continued into the 2000s, particularly within naval diving schools and among certain combat swimmers.

After several years without an official presence, Tudor renewed this heritage in 2021 with the introduction of the Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale. Far from being a nostalgic re-edition or a simple historical nod, the brand adopted a radically different approach. The FXD was developed according to a modern military specification, created in direct collaboration with the combat swimmers of Commando Hubert, one of the French Navy’s most specialised units. Every technical decision stems from a precise operational requirement, following a philosophy of pure functionality.

The “M.N.21” engraving, found on the earliest production pieces, deliberately revives the tradition of Tudor-issued watches delivered to the French Navy throughout the 20th century. It identifies the very first examples produced as part of this renewed partnership and grants these watches an already historical dimension. Like the Tudor Marine Nationale models of the 1960s and 1970s, these first FXD watches form part of a tangible continuum, where the object transcends its original function to become a true witness to history.

At the crossroads between a contemporary military watch and a future heritage piece, the Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale represents the most accomplished expression of the relationship between Tudor and the French Navy. A relationship founded not on prestige or communication, but on use, trust and rigor—values that have defined the DNA of Tudor-issued watches for nearly seventy years.

The model

At first glance, the Tudor Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale might evoke a classic Pelagos. In reality, it differs profoundly. Developed from a precise military specification, it was conceived not as a versatile dive watch, but as an underwater navigation instrument intended for French Navy combat swimmers. Every technical choice responds to a concrete use case, following a philosophy of pure functionality.

The 42 mm case is crafted entirely from titanium, a material chosen for its lightness, corrosion resistance and robustness in marine environments. Its construction is specific: the strap bars are fixed and machined directly into the case, hence the name FXD for “Fixed.” This monobloc architecture, inspired by historical military watches, ensures maximum strap security under all circumstances, eliminating any risk of spring bar failure during demanding operations. The fully satin-finished surfaces give the watch a matte, instrumental appearance, deliberately limiting light reflections.

The Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale features a water resistance rating of 200 metres, perfectly suited to the real-world needs of combat swimmers, whose missions are primarily conducted in shallow waters. In the same logic, the watch deliberately forgoes a helium escape valve and a date display, favouring slimness, legibility and mechanical reliability. The result is a thinner, more comfortable case that remains perfectly balanced for extended wear.

The central feature of the model lies in its bidirectional bezel, equipped with 120 clicks and graduated in a retrograde manner from 60 to 0. This specific configuration does not comply with the ISO standard for traditional dive watches, and that is precisely what makes it unique. It was designed to support the technique of “successive heading navigation,” used by combat swimmers during underwater movements. Combined with a luminescent ceramic insert, it allows for quick and repeated countdowns, offering optimal legibility even when wearing gloves and in low-visibility conditions.

The matte navy blue dial follows the aesthetic continuity of historical Tudor Marine Nationale watches. It features large square hour markers and the iconic Snowflake hands, introduced by Tudor in the late 1960s to improve night-time legibility. The generous luminous treatment ensures immediate readability, while the absence of a date and the restrained typography reinforce the utilitarian and well-balanced character of the watch.

At the heart of the Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale beats the manufacture calibre MT5602, an automatic movement certified as a chronometer by the COSC and regulated to Tudor’s internal standards of –2/+4 seconds per day. Equipped with a silicon hairspring, a variable-inertia balance and offering a 70-hour power reserve, it prioritises robustness, stability and endurance. A coherent choice with the model’s philosophy, where mechanical performance serves purpose rather than demonstration.

Finally, the Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale is delivered with a one-piece textile strap, developed in collaboration with the French manufacture Julien Faure and woven on traditional Jacquard looms. Its navy blue ribbon with a central silver stripe, fitted with a titanium “D” buckle and a self-gripping fastening system, pays tribute to the artisanal straps historically used by French military divers. A supple and comfortable one-piece rubber strap completes the set, enhancing the versatility and wearing comfort of this true mission instrument.

The package

This Tudor Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale belongs to the very first production series, identifiable by the “M.N.21” engraving on the case back. Officially presented in November 2021, this model was produced with this engraving for an extremely short period, estimated at around two months, before subsequent series were engraved with the following year. This specificity grants M.N.21 examples an already highly sought-after status, both for their early production and their strict conformity to the original configuration of the model.

The watch offered here is delivered as a Full Set, complete with its original presentation box, manual, textile strap and one-piece rubber strap, in accordance with the original delivery. It is also accompanied by its Tudor warranty card dated 2022 and benefits from the brand’s international 5-year warranty, valid until 2027.

Prior to sale, this Pelagos FXD underwent a comprehensive inspection in our workshops, including a thorough check, movement verification and a water-resistance test, ensuring flawless operation and complete peace of mind. Combining rarity, authenticity and condition, this FXD Marine Nationale M.N.21 stands out as a prime choice for the discerning collector, already fully aware of its place in Tudor’s contemporary history.
