The story

At the time, the requirements were clear: to rely on instruments that were reliable, highly legible and robust, capable of accompanying military divers in demanding environments, without depending on fragile technologies or experimental solutions.

The first reports were unequivocal. Water resistance was deemed “perfect,” overall performance “entirely satisfactory,” and legibility met operational expectations. On the strength of these results, Tudor was officially appointed supplier to the French Navy in 1961, initiating a collaboration that would endure for decades. For many years, French military divers wore Tudor watches as true issued instruments, delivered without bracelets and later adapted to field conditions by the units themselves.

Over the years, numerous Tudor Submariner references accompanied the French Navy’s combat swimmers and diving schools. The 42 mm case is crafted entirely from titanium, a material chosen for its lightness, corrosion resistance and robustness in marine environments. Its construction is specific: the strap bars are fixed and machined directly into the case, hence the name FXD for “Fixed.” This monobloc architecture, inspired by historical military watches, ensures maximum strap security under all circumstances, eliminating any risk of spring bar failure during demanding operations. The fully satin-finished surfaces give the watch a matte, instrumental appearance, deliberately limiting light reflections.

The Pelagos FXD Marine Nationale features a water resistance rating of 200 metres, perfectly suited to the real-world needs of combat swimmers, whose missions are primarily conducted in shallow waters.
