The second edition of the legendary “Monaco Gulf” series, launched in 2007 and limited to 4,000 pieces, this CW211A model perfectly embodies the neo-vintage spirit so cherished by collectors. With its 38 mm case and plexiglass crystal, it recaptures the feel and charm of the historic Monaco watches, while asserting a more sophisticated style thanks to its black dial. Enhanced by the legendary blue and orange Gulf stripes, directly inspired by the world of motorsports and Steve McQueen, it stands out today as one of the most desirable versions in the collection.

The Monaco story

In 1969, Heuer made a lasting impression with the launch of the Monaco, the world’s first square, water-resistant automatic chronograph. The release of the film Le Mans in 1971 propelled the Monaco onto the international stage thanks to Steve McQueen, who wore a Heuer Monaco in the movie, creating a series of iconic images that still form a cornerstone of TAG Heuer’s marketing today.

The original Heuer Monaco was produced for less than 10 years, having been introduced in 1969 and discontinued around 1978. However, TAG Heuer’s reissues of the Monaco have enjoyed great success, with numerous variations released over the past 25 years. While the Monaco chronograph may have been ahead of its time in the 1970s, it has since established itself as a modern classic in the 21st century.

Monaco & Gulf, an icon born from cinema and racing

The partnership between Heuer and Gulf dates back to the early 1970s, in a unique context blending motorsport and cinema. In 1971, Steve McQueen wore a Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 in the film Le Mans, driving a Porsche 917K in Gulf livery — light blue, orange, and dark blue accents. This image left a lasting mark on watchmaking history and cemented the Monaco’s legendary status.

This connection was strengthened by real ties between Heuer and the motorsport world. Gulf was a partner of JW Automotive Engineering, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while driver Jo Siffert — a Heuer ambassador — indirectly contributed to this bridge between racing and watchmaking. It was within this ecosystem that one of the industry’s most iconic associations was born.

After a period of absence, the Monaco made a strong comeback in the late 1990s with the third generation (1999–2009), marked by references such as the CW211X. This revival allowed TAG Heuer to progressively reinterpret the model’s historical codes, notably through dials inspired by the version worn by McQueen.

In 2005, the brand reached a milestone with the first Monaco Gulf limited edition of 4,000 pieces (ref. CW2118), featuring a white dial inspired directly by Steve McQueen’s racing suit. Two years later, in 2007, TAG Heuer introduced the Monaco Gulf Calibre 17 ref. CW211A, a more assertive and sportier evolution.

This version features a contrasting black dial highlighting the iconic Gulf stripes and introduces a now-signature detail: the “Gulf” logo replaces the “Monaco” inscription above the date window. Also limited to 4,000 pieces, it is now highly sought after for its sportier aesthetic and its place in the collection’s timeline.

Over the years, TAG Heuer continued to explore this theme with versions powered by Calibre 12, Calibre 11, and Heuer 02 movements, each offering its own interpretation. However, the early editions — particularly this CW211A — remain among the most iconic.

Today, the Monaco Gulf extends far beyond watchmaking: it has become a symbol. A watch at the crossroads of design, motorsport, and popular culture, instantly recognizable and deeply embedded in the collective imagination.

The model

This TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Calibre 17 ref. CW211A features the iconic square Monaco silhouette, with a 38 mm case defined by sharp, instantly recognizable lines. True to reissues from this period, it is equipped with a domed plexiglass crystal, enhancing its vintage charm and its visual proximity to historical Monaco models.

Its black dial is the defining element of this edition. More contrasted and sportier than the first Monaco Gulf from 2005, it pays tribute to Steve McQueen’s Gulf-liveried Porsche in Le Mans. The vertical blue and orange stripes, directly inspired by Gulf racing colors, create a bold and instantly recognizable identity.

Another key detail: the “Monaco” inscription is positioned at 12 o’clock, while the “Gulf” logo appears above the date window at 6 o’clock. This specific configuration contributes significantly to the collectability of this reference.

The black chronograph subdials integrate discreetly into the dial, allowing the Gulf design to take center stage. The hands and indexes ensure clear readability, while the orange accents add a perfectly balanced racing energy.

Unlike more recent Calibre 11 versions, this reference retains a right-side crown, accompanied by chronograph pushers on the same side. It is fitted with a perforated black leather strap with orange stitching, perfectly complementing the automotive spirit of the watch.

Powered by the automatic Calibre 17, this Monaco Gulf delivers reliable and proven performance.

Limited to 4,000 pieces, this CW211A is now considered one of the most charismatic Monaco Gulf models — a piece that is both vintage in spirit and sporty in style.
