Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M automatic 45,5 mm Full Set 2013
While the fourth generation of the Seamaster Planet Ocean, unveiled to mark the collection’s 20th anniversary, is gradually moving away from the model’s historical design cues, this second-generation version embodies the very essence of the PO. With its bold design, 600-meter water resistance, and professional diver’s DNA, it offers a more authentic and faithful interpretation of the original spirit of the Planet Ocean.
Seamaster Planet Ocean, OMEGA’s extreme dive watch
Launched in 2005, the Seamaster Planet Ocean marked a key milestone in OMEGA’s modern history. Designed as a response to the most demanding professional dive watches on the market, it complements the Seamaster range by offering a more technical and more radical alternative to the renowned Diver 300M.
To fully understand its positioning, one must return to the DNA of the Seamaster collection. Introduced in 1948, the line quickly evolved into the world of professional diving with the Seamaster 300 in 1957, followed by extreme models such as the Ploprof developed with COMEX in the 1970s. The Planet Ocean belongs to this lineage — that of watches engineered to push technical boundaries.
From its launch, the Planet Ocean featured a water resistance of 600 meters, far exceeding the standards of recreational diving. This positioning makes it a true tool watch, designed for extreme environments, even if in practice few users will fully exploit its capabilities. Like the Rolex Sea-Dweller, it embodies a form of technical excellence, both in performance and in the image it conveys.
The first generation (2005–2011) laid the foundations with a powerful design, large indexes, immediate legibility, and the introduction of the renowned Co-Axial calibre 2500. It already reflected OMEGA’s clear intention to create a modern, reliable, and robust dive watch.
The second generation, introduced in 2011 — to which this reference belongs — represents a major turning point. It saw the arrival of in-house movements, notably the calibre 8500 developed internally by OMEGA. This evolution was accompanied by a significant step up in quality: more refined finishing, enhanced dials, larger applied indexes, and the introduction of a sapphire caseback, allowing the movement to be admired.
It is also from this generation onward that the collection diversified further, with multiple sizes (37.5 mm, 42 mm, and 45.5 mm), new materials such as titanium, and various dial and bezel options, including blue and ceramic. The Planet Ocean thus became a complete line, appealing both to tool watch enthusiasts and those seeking a more sophisticated dive watch.
Today, as the fourth generation celebrates the model’s 20th anniversary with a more contemporary interpretation — sometimes further removed from its original codes — the first and second generations are often regarded as the most faithful to the original spirit: that of a robust, legible, no-compromise dive watch.
With the Planet Ocean, OMEGA offers a fully realized vision of the modern dive watch: a timepiece that is technical, powerful, and deeply rooted in the history of underwater exploration.
The model
This Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M in its 45.5 mm format perfectly embodies the balance sought by OMEGA during the second generation: a bold professional dive watch enhanced with technical and aesthetic details that would gradually become brand standards.
Its stainless steel case delivers a strong wrist presence while maintaining coherence thanks to well-controlled proportions. It is topped by a unidirectional rotating bezel in black ceramic, featuring a clear and durable minute scale for precise time tracking.
The matte black dial plays a central role. Clean, deep, and highly legible, it highlights essential elements without excess. Applied indexes and hands are generously coated with Super-LumiNova®, ensuring optimal readability in all conditions. A distinctive feature of this generation is the differentiation of luminescent colors: blue emission across the dial and a green minute hand, allowing immediate reading of critical diving information.
The Planet Ocean’s visual signature is also present with the orange “Seamaster” inscription, adding a subtle dynamic touch to this highly functional dial. Protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, the dial maintains excellent legibility.
Designed for extreme environments, the watch is equipped with a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock — a characteristic feature of professional dive watches — allowing gas release during saturation diving. Its 600-meter water resistance confirms its uncompromising positioning.
On the reverse, the sapphire caseback reveals the OMEGA manufacture calibre 8500, the true technical heart of this Planet Ocean. Introduced to mark the brand’s industrial independence, this automatic movement incorporates the Co-Axial escapement, reducing friction and improving precision and durability.
Equipped with twin barrels in series, it offers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours with stable energy delivery. It also features an independently adjustable hour hand — a particularly useful function for everyday use. Visible through the transparent caseback, it is distinguished by its arabesque Geneva waves, a signature aesthetic of OMEGA.
Finally, this Planet Ocean is fitted with an integrated steel bracelet, reinforcing its robust and technical character. Equipped with a folding clasp featuring a diver’s extension, it ensures excellent wrist support while allowing quick adjustment, even over a wetsuit.
This reference represents a particularly successful balance in the history of the Planet Ocean: a model that retains the robust and legible spirit of the early generations while incorporating technical advancements that anticipate the standards of more recent versions.
