Blending classicism with modernity, the steel Constellation Observatory with a green dial exudes a strong personality, enhancing its timeless lines with a vibrant and elegant hue.
The Constellation legacy
The Constellation collection embodies OMEGA’s commitment to certified precision. Originally conceived as a line of mass-produced chronometers, it quickly established itself as the technical showcase of the manufacture, at a time when chronometric performance was at the heart of watchmaking competition. Its name, like its emblem, originates from precision trials held in major observatories, particularly in Geneva and Neuchâtel, where OMEGA distinguished itself by achieving numerous records.
Today, with its new Constellation Observatory collection, OMEGA delivers one of the most significant launches in its recent history, bringing together in a single watch both the legacy of its greatest Constellation models and a major advancement in the field of precision watchmaking. A direct descendant of the models introduced in 1952, this new generation reconnects with the most iconic codes of the line: the twelve-faceted “pie-pan” dial, the Constellation star at 6 o’clock, “dog-leg” lugs and a caseback adorned with the famous observatory medallion. These details recall the foundational role of the Constellation in OMEGA’s history — a collection designed from the outset as the expression of certified precision according to the highest standards of its time.
Certification innovation
With the Constellation Observatory, OMEGA introduces a major advancement in the way watch precision is measured and certified. Until now, certification protocols — notably those of the COSC — relied heavily on observing the seconds hand. This served as a visual reference to evaluate the rate of the movement at defined intervals. A technical constraint long considered essential… until now.
For the first time, OMEGA has succeeded in moving beyond this requirement thanks to a new methodology developed within its Precision Laboratory. Inaugurated in 2023 and certified by METAS, this independent laboratory has designed a system capable of evaluating a watch’s precision without relying on a seconds hand. The Constellation Observatory thus becomes the first two-hand watch to achieve Master Chronometer certification while being tested in its fully assembled, final configuration.
At the heart of this innovation lies Dual Metric Technology, a groundbreaking approach that combines acoustic analysis with optical monitoring of the hands. Rather than capturing the position of a hand at a specific moment, the system continuously records the sound of each beat of the movement — the characteristic “tick-tock” produced by the escapement — while simultaneously monitoring the environment in which the watch operates.
Over a period of 25 days, the watch undergoes the full range of Master Chronometer tests: positional variations, exposure to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, power reserve verification, water resistance and overall precision. Thanks to this continuous analysis, it becomes possible to understand the behavior of the movement in detail, identify precisely when and under which conditions variations occur, and obtain a far more refined reading of the watch’s real-world performance.
This new approach marks a fundamental evolution: precision is no longer measured through isolated snapshots, but analyzed in continuity. Through the Constellation Observatory, OMEGA not only achieves a high level of precision — it redefines the very standards by which it is evaluated.
The model — Green dial
With its green dial, the Constellation Observatory offers a bolder and distinctly contemporary interpretation of its heritage design. The color, both deep and vibrant, subtly shifts with the light and beautifully highlights the construction of the “pie-pan” dial. The twelve facets take on an even more expressive dimension here, enhancing both the relief and the overall visual dynamism.
The stamped pattern on the peripheral facets amplifies this interplay of light, adding rhythm to the dial while maintaining excellent legibility. The faceted kite-shaped indexes, precisely applied, stand out elegantly against the colored background, while the dauphine hands ensure clear and fluid time reading. The Constellation star at 6 o’clock discreetly recalls the collection’s heritage, anchoring this more modern version within a strong watchmaking tradition.
The O-MEGASTEEL case, with its superior mechanical properties and slightly brighter tone than traditional steel, perfectly balances the richness of the dial. The “dog-leg” lugs, a signature of the earliest Constellation models, bring visual tension and structure to the watch’s silhouette, reinforcing its identity without excess. The interplay of polished and brushed finishes subtly highlights each line of the case.
Fitted with an alligator leather strap, this green version is designed for enthusiasts seeking distinction. More expressive than classic variations, it asserts a strong personality while maintaining refined elegance. An ideal proposition for those looking to add a piece to their collection that is at once modern, original, and deeply rooted in OMEGA’s heritage.
Mechanical side
At the heart of the Constellation Observatory lies a next-generation OMEGA manufacture movement, designed to meet the highest standards of precision, reliability and durability. This stainless steel model is powered by the automatic calibre 8914, directly derived from the proven 89xx architecture, renowned for its performance and long-term robustness.
Equipped with the Co-Axial escapement — OMEGA’s signature technological innovation — this movement reduces internal friction and improves long-term rate stability. It also features a silicon balance spring, ensuring excellent resistance to magnetic fields and temperature variations. Operating at a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour (3.5 Hz), it offers a comfortable power reserve of approximately 60 hours, ensuring smooth daily use.
Visible through a transparent caseback, the calibre 8914 showcases refined finishing, including arabesque Geneva waves and a distinctive openworked rotor. The latter is adorned with the “Constellation Observatory” medallion, a direct nod to the collection’s precision heritage and its link to observatory chronometry competitions.
Beyond its technical specifications, this movement stands out above all for its Master Chronometer certification, achieved under unprecedented conditions. Tested within the Precision Laboratory, it meets particularly strict criteria, with a daily accuracy ranging between 0 and +5 seconds, while resisting magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. An achievement made even more remarkable by the absence of a seconds hand, made possible by a new methodology based on continuous performance analysis.
Through this calibre, OMEGA once again demonstrates its ability to evolve its technologies while building on solid mechanical foundations. The result is a movement that is modern, reliable and innovative, perfectly aligned with the spirit of the Constellation Observatory.
Neo-retro spirit & watchmaking elegance
Beyond its technical achievement, the Constellation Observatory captivates through a deeply emotional approach to watchmaking, where neo-retro aesthetics take on their full meaning. With its two-hand display, it returns to essentials and embraces the codes of classic dress watches, those that favored the purity of time over the constant display of the seconds. This choice naturally reinforces its dress watch character — elegant, timeless and designed to transcend eras without ever going out of style.
Every detail contributes to this impression of refined mastery. Here, we find everything that defines the charm of the finest vintage references: a legible architecture, balanced proportions and meticulous attention to finishing.
This Constellation Observatory fully aligns with a trend we particularly appreciate at Lepage: that of neo-classical watchmaking, capable of reinterpreting past icons with today’s technical and aesthetic standards. A connoisseur’s watch, one that does not seek excess, but instead asserts its style, legitimacy and precision with confidence.
