Pure, luminous, and resolutely contemporary, the Seiko Presage SPB445J1 celebrates the centuries-old art of Arita porcelain with a handcrafted “Hakuji” dial. Paired with the automatic caliber 6R5H with a 72-hour power reserve, this Craftsmanship Series creation embodies the subtle alliance between Japanese craftsmanship and modern elegance.
Presage & Craftsmanship – Mechanical Elegance in Service of Japanese Arts
Within the Seiko universe, the Presage collection embodies a particular vision of watchmaking: an elegant mechanical watch, designed as much for precision as for the beauty of its dial. Where other ranges highlight sporting performance or technological innovation, Presage embraces a more cultural approach, in which design and material play a central role.
This is precisely the ambition of the Presage Craftsmanship Series: to turn the dial into a work of art in its own right, drawing on renowned Japanese artisanal techniques. Enamel, urushi lacquer, Shippo enamel, Arita porcelain… each creation becomes a statement of craftsmanship, developed in collaboration with specialized workshops, often rooted in Japan’s historic craft regions.
The Seiko Presage SPB445J1 follows this logic with a clear intention: to offer a watch with a clean, contemporary design, whose soul lies in the nobility of a material rarely seen in watchmaking — Arita porcelain. Here, elegance does not come from a spectacular complication, but from a luminous, demanding material shaped according to a centuries-old tradition.
Arita Porcelain – Hakuji, Tradition and Master Craftsmanship
The true heart of the SPB445J1 lies in its Arita porcelain dial, a material deeply linked to Japan’s cultural history. Produced for more than 400 years in the town of Arita on the island of Kyushu, this porcelain is renowned for its fineness, its whiteness, and the way it reflects light with a uniquely soft character.
For the Presage Craftsmanship Series, Seiko collaborates with Shingama Kiln, founded in 1830 and still run by the founding family today. Dial production is supervised by master artisan Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, a recognized specialist in porcelain watch dials.
Unlike enamel, porcelain is created from a clay-based material that is precisely molded into the shape of a dial. The process is long and demanding:
- Forming the porcelain disc in a dedicated mold
- First firing at around 1,300°C
- Hand application of a transparent glaze
- Second firing to set the glaze and reveal a faint bluish tone
- Adjustments and finishing, including a final firing to smooth the surface
The result is a one-piece dial, thicker and more structured than an enamel dial. The so-called “Hakuji” finish — a pure white enhanced by a clear glaze — gives the surface a slightly milky, almost creamy appearance, capturing light with unique depth.
This material offers a different tactile and visual character compared to enamel: less glassy, more organic. It evokes the fine Arita porcelains exported to Europe in the 17th century — a discreet but essential cultural reference linking Japanese tradition to an international aesthetic.
On the SPB445J1, porcelain is not a decorative background. It is the watch’s primary subject: a living, luminous surface that defines the model’s entire character.
Dial Architecture – Depth, Symmetry and Modernity
If Arita porcelain is the raw material, the dial’s architecture is what reveals its full richness.
The SPB445J1 adopts a deliberately pared-back composition to let light fully play across the Hakuji surface. The applied baton indexes are slim and restrained, chosen specifically so they do not distract from the porcelain’s natural glow. A precise minute track discreetly structures the outer edge.
The dial is not entirely flat, however. It features a multi-level construction:
- A slightly domed central area
- A recessed border marking the separation with the hour ring
- A delicately fluted pattern between the indexes and the central section
This subtle motif catches light differently depending on viewing angle, enhancing the depth of the material. It represents a notable evolution within the Arita line, adding relief without breaking the overall harmony.
At 6 o’clock, the recessed 24-hour subdial creates a discreet play of shadows. This indication, synchronized with the main time (and not independent), is not a GMT function: it offers a day/night reference while contributing to the dial’s symmetrical balance.
Blued hands provide a refined contrast. Their intense tone recalls fine porcelains decorated with cobalt blue — another nod to the history of Japanese ceramic arts. The tips of the minute and seconds hands are slightly curved toward the indexes to improve visual precision when reading the time.
The overall impression is one of controlled purity: a modern, symmetrical, luminous design where every detail serves the material.
Case & Bracelet – A Modern, Structured Elegance
While the dial speaks of centuries-old craftsmanship, the SPB445J1 case is resolutely contemporary.
Its proportions are firmly modern, with a 40.6 mm diameter, 12.5 mm thickness, and an approximately 49 mm lug-to-lug length. Dimensions that may appear generous for a dress watch, yet they deliver balanced presence on the wrist. The lugs are deeply curved, allowing the watch to naturally follow the wrist despite its length.
The stainless-steel case alternates brushed and polished surfaces, creating a subtle contrast that extends the dial’s luminosity. The whole is protected by Seiko’s super-hard Diashield coating, designed to strengthen scratch resistance and preserve the brilliance of the finishing over time.
The dial is protected by a double-domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating. Its curvature helps visually reduce thickness while amplifying the perceived depth of the porcelain dial.
Another notable element for a watch in this category: 100 meters (10 bar) of water resistance. Rare in such a refined piece, this level of protection gives the SPB445J1 unexpected versatility and reinforces its everyday-wear character.
The watch is fitted with a multi-row stainless-steel bracelet featuring contrasting finishes. Slim polished links are framed by brushed surfaces, while the outer edges catch the light with subtle definition. The clasp (butterfly or deployant depending on market) ensures secure, comfortable wear while maintaining a clean, understated look.
The SPB445J1 therefore strikes a successful balance between delicate craftsmanship and robust construction — a luminous watch, firmly anchored in its era.
Calibre 6R5H – Modern Reliability and Extended Autonomy
Beneath the Arita porcelain dial beats the in-house Seiko 6R5H calibre, now a core movement within the Presage Craftsmanship range.
A modern evolution of the 6R family, it delivers a 72-hour power reserve — three full days of autonomy. This is a valuable advantage for a watch worn in rotation, allowing it to be set aside over a weekend without stopping.
The 6R5H runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and includes:
- Automatic winding with manual-winding capability
- Hacking seconds for precise time-setting
- 24 jewels
- A 24-hour indication synchronized with the main time display
This 24-hour display, positioned at 6 o’clock, is not an independent second time zone but a day/night indicator consistent with the dial’s overall architecture.
Seiko’s stated accuracy of +25 / -15 seconds per day falls within expectations for this category, with proven real-world reliability.
Visible through the screw-down exhibition caseback, the movement reveals an oscillating rotor with understated decoration. True to Seiko’s philosophy, priority is given to robustness and consistency rather than unnecessary ornamentation.
With its artisanal dial, 100-meter water resistance, and three-day autonomy, the SPB445J1 brings together noble material and a solid mechanical foundation. It is not merely a showcase of Arita craftsmanship — it is a complete, coherent, durable watch.
