Compact, vintage, and incredibly effective, the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS SRPK89 revives the spirit of the 1970s in a modernized, robust version that is perfectly suited for everyday use.

Seiko 5: a popular icon since 1963

Launched in 1963 with the Sportsmatic 5, the Seiko 5 collection was born from a simple yet revolutionary ambition: to offer a reliable, robust and affordable mechanical watch to the widest possible audience.

The “5” referred to five essential features:

  • Automatic movement
  • Day/date display
  • Water resistance
  • Crown positioned at 4 o’clock
  • Durable case and bracelet construction

Designed as an everyday watch, the Seiko 5 quickly became the gateway to mechanical watchmaking for generations of enthusiasts.

With the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS line, the Japanese manufacture revisits this heritage through a more compact, vintage-inspired and versatile lens.

The SRPK89 fully embodies this philosophy: a no-nonsense automatic watch inspired by the 1970s, yet perfectly suited to modern expectations.

The SRPK89: a neo-vintage SNXS designed as a true EDC

With the SRPK89, Seiko draws inspiration from the 1970s SNXS models while subtly modernising the overall execution.

The stainless steel case features a compact 37.4 mm diameter—a size that has become rare today and is particularly appreciated by enthusiasts seeking balanced proportions. With a lug-to-lug length of 44.7 mm and a thickness of approximately 12.5 mm, the watch offers a natural, comfortable and highly versatile presence on the wrist.

The silhouette retains one of the key hallmarks of the Seiko 5 collection:
the partially recessed crown at 4 o’clock, discreet and ergonomic. It reinforces the historical identity of the line while enhancing everyday comfort.

The case design plays with alternating brushed and polished surfaces. The fixed polished bezel adds a refined touch, while the satin-finished flanks emphasise durability for daily wear. The SRPK89 thus occupies an interesting position:
neither fully sporty nor strictly dressy—yet perfectly at ease in both contexts.

A contrasted black dial, a subtle tribute to 1970s Seiko 5 models

The dial of the Seiko 5 Sports SRPK89 is arguably the element that most clearly expresses this return to roots.

Its deep black sunburst finish captures light with subtlety. Depending on the angle, it shifts from intense black to anthracite reflections, bringing genuine visual richness to a watch that remains intentionally simple in concept.

Seiko has intelligently modernised the design by integrating a contrasting white chapter ring with a railway-style minute track. This detail breaks away from the monochrome look of older SNXS models, enhancing legibility while adding a contemporary touch.

The applied baton indexes, sharp and well proportioned, are filled with slightly eggshell-tinted LumiBrite. This aesthetic choice evokes the natural patina of vintage tritium dials without exaggeration. The result is warm, subtly retro and still elegant.

The orange seconds hand injects energy into the composition. A direct nod to many Seiko 5 models of the 1970s, it adds a graphic accent that prevents austerity and reinforces the watch’s sporty character.

At 3 o’clock, the day/date display remains faithful to Seiko 5 DNA. Black discs with white printing improve contrast and visual integration. Functional, legible and perfectly aligned with the collection’s utilitarian spirit.

Water resistance has also been upgraded to 100 metres—a significant improvement over earlier SNXS generations limited to 30 m. This evolution genuinely transforms the watch into a true Everyday Carry (EDC): swimming, rain, active use… it follows without constraint.

Calibre 4R36: the reliable engine of modern Seiko 5

Inside the Seiko 5 Sports SRPK89 beats the manufacture calibre 4R36, an automatic movement that has become a benchmark in the world of accessible mechanical watches.

The 4R36 is engineered for robustness, reliability and ease of use.

It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and delivers approximately 41 hours of power reserve—well suited to everyday wear. Most importantly, it incorporates two major upgrades over earlier Seiko 5 generations:

  • Hacking seconds: the seconds hand stops when setting the time, allowing precise adjustment.
  • Manual winding capability: in addition to bidirectional automatic winding, the watch can be wound via the crown.

These two features meaningfully enhance the user experience, particularly for a first mechanical watch purchase.

The 4R36 prioritises reliability above all. It is designed to withstand daily shocks, temperature variations and sustained use. In true Seiko 5 spirit, the mechanics must remain accessible, durable and easy to maintain.

The movement is visible through the screw-down transparent caseback—a welcome detail for enthusiasts discovering mechanical watchmaking. Watching the rotor oscillate and the balance wheel beat adds to the pleasure of ownership.

In this price segment, offering a fully in-house developed automatic calibre remains a strong argument. Few brands can claim the same.

The opinion of the Lepage team
The SRPK89 is one of the most coherent offerings in Seiko's current catalog. It retains the DNA of the historic Seiko 5—an affordable, robust, and versatile automatic watch—while incorporating the improvements expected in 2024: water resistance increased to 100 meters, a new, higher-quality strap, and a 4R36 caliber with manual winding and a stop-second function. Its modest diameter of 37.4 mm makes it a truly universal watch, as elegant as it is comfortable. An excellent first mechanical watch, but also a very relevant choice for the discerning enthusiast looking for a perfectly balanced vintage EDC piece.
