A true Prospex diver's watch with a bold character, imbued with Samurai DNA and featuring a spectacular emerald green PADI dial: robust, reliable, and ready for action.
Prospex x PADI: a natural partnership since 2016
For over 60 years, Seiko has shaped the history of dive watches. In 1965, the Japanese manufacture unveiled its very first diver, paving the way for a lineage that would become legendary among professionals and enthusiasts alike.
One year later, in 1966, PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) was founded, now the world’s leading scuba diving training organisation. Two institutions, two parallel stories… officially brought together in 2016 with the signing of a long-term partnership.
Since then, Seiko Prospex PADI Special Editions have embodied this legitimate collaboration:
watches built for action—reliable, robust, and designed for the underwater world.
With the Prospex Samurai SRPL53 PADI Special Edition, Seiko continues this tradition in 2025 with a renewed approach:
- An all-new emerald green dial
- An immersive aesthetic inspired by ocean depths
- A modernised Samurai case
- An accessible in-house automatic movement
A true professional diver, offered at a particularly compelling price point.
An immersive emerald green dial, PADI’s 2025 signature
The defining feature of the Seiko Prospex SRPL53 PADI Special Edition is its dial.
For 2025, Seiko moves away from the traditional PADI blues and opts for a gradient emerald green tone—deep and hypnotic. This choice is far from arbitrary: it evokes light filtering through water when looking up toward the surface from below.
The subtly textured pattern creates an immersive, almost organic visual effect. The gradient darkens toward the lower part of the dial, enhancing the sensation of underwater depth.
The whole is framed by:
- A unidirectional rotating bezel with matching green insert
- Sharp contrast between the indexes and the smoky background
- The PADI logo proudly printed on the dial, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the model
The timekeeping elements remain faithful to the Samurai DNA:
- Generously sized applied indexes
- Broad arrow-shaped hour hand
- Elongated, highly legible minute hand
- Central seconds hand with triangular tip
All are coated with LumiBrite, ensuring optimal legibility in darkness or underwater.
The date at 4:30—a frequent Seiko signature—is paired with a colour-matched date disc to preserve visual harmony.
The result: a dial full of personality—technical yet expressive—that transforms this Samurai into a true adventure watch.
A modernised Samurai case: angular and assertive
The Prospex SRPL53 adopts the iconic Samurai design, instantly recognisable thanks to its sharp lines and pronounced edges.
Inspired by Japanese—almost architectural—aesthetics, the case alternates brushed surfaces with polished accents to emphasise its dynamic character. Flat flanks and crisp bevels give it the faceted identity that has defined the collection’s success.
This generation benefits from improved ergonomics:
- 41.7 mm diameter
- 12.3 mm thickness
- 49.5 mm lug-to-lug
- 20 mm lug width
The diameter remains assertive, but the controlled thickness and revised proportions make the watch more wearable than previous generations. It retains a true tool-watch presence without becoming excessive.
A genuine 200 m diver
The SRPL53 remains faithful to Prospex standards:
- 200-metre water resistance
- Screw-down crown
- Screw-down solid caseback
- Unidirectional, knurled bezel easy to operate even with gloves
The Hardlex crystal (Seiko’s proprietary hardened mineral glass) helps maintain an attractive price positioning while offering solid impact resistance.
Fitted with a three-link stainless steel bracelet—now featuring solid links and improved finishing compared to earlier versions—the watch is equipped with a folding clasp and dive extension.
Calibre 4R35: accessible in-house reliability
At the heart of the Seiko Prospex Samurai SRPL53 PADI beats the 4R35 calibre, an automatic movement entirely developed and manufactured in-house by Seiko.
In this price segment, having a manufacture movement is a genuine advantage. While many brands rely on external suppliers, Seiko controls the entire production chain here—from case to movement.
The 4R35 operates at:
- 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz)
- 41-hour power reserve
- Automatic winding with manual winding capability
- Hacking seconds for precise time-setting
- Hours, minutes, seconds and date display
Its stated tolerance range may appear broad on paper, but in practice, this movement generally proves more stable than official figures suggest. It is recognised for its robustness and longevity.
The 4R35 is not a decorative movement—and that is not its purpose. It is designed first and foremost for reliability and efficiency. Built to withstand daily wear, absorb shocks and handle the varying conditions a true dive watch may encounter, it prioritises durability over aesthetic sophistication. Its proven architecture also allows for straightforward, well-managed servicing over time.
In true Prospex spirit, pure functionality remains the priority. And in that respect, the 4R35 fulfils its role perfectly: delivering a solid, durable engine consistent with the DNA of a tool watch built for action.
