Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC965 “Youngtimer”: a solar chronograph with a mint green dial, inspired by the iconic sports cars of the 80s and 90s, combining vintage racing spirit with modern precision.
Speedtimer: Seiko’s chronograph heritage since 1969
In 1969, Seiko made history by unveiling one of the world’s very first automatic chronographs: the Speedtimer. At a time when sports timekeeping was becoming a major challenge—particularly in the world of motorsport—the Japanese manufacture asserted its vision: precision, robustness and instant legibility.
With its tachymeter scale, contrasting sub-dials and performance-driven design, the Speedtimer quickly established itself as a true racing instrument.
Now part of the Prospex collection—short for “Professional Specifications”—the Speedtimer lives on in modern versions that retain this racing DNA while incorporating contemporary technologies, notably a solar-powered movement.
A mint green “Youngtimer” Panda dial with neo-racing charm
The true highlight of the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC965 is its dial.
Inspired by the iconic “Panda” aesthetic, it pairs a mint green background with three contrasting black sub-dials. This architecture, emblematic of 1960s and 1970s automotive chronographs, ensures quick and intuitive reading of elapsed times—essential in the world of motorsport.
Here, the green is neither saturated nor flashy. It recalls the body colours of 1980s–90s sports cars—the famed “Youngtimers”—with a fresh, slightly pastel tone that delivers real personality while remaining elegant.
The details reinforce this controlled neo-vintage identity:
• Applied indexes generously filled with LumiBrite
• Broad “fencepost” hands, signature of the solar Speedtimer models
• Slim, arrow-tipped central chronograph seconds hand
• Subtly tinted luminescence, evoking a light patina
The three black counters—small seconds, 60-minute totaliser and 24-hour indicator—structure the dial with clarity and balance.
The date window at 4:30 remains discreet and integrates harmoniously without disturbing the overall symmetry.
The result: a fresh, distinctive and instantly recognisable chronograph that blends vintage spirit with confident modernity.
A compact, sporty case with brushed steel bezel
The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC965 retains the ideal format of the range: a 39 mm stainless steel case, perfectly proportioned for a contemporary chronograph.
Neither too imposing nor too discreet, this diameter ensures excellent versatility on the wrist. The controlled thickness and balanced lug-to-lug length guarantee comfortable, well-centred wear.
The emblematic Speedtimer codes are all present:
• Fixed brushed steel tachymeter bezel with engraved scale
• Scale allowing the measurement of average speed
• Alternating satin-brushed surfaces and polished accents
• Well-integrated pushers with crisp activation
The brushed steel bezel adds a brighter, more tool-watch dimension compared to versions with a black insert. It enhances the neo-vintage character and recalls certain 1960s racing chronographs while maintaining contemporary restraint.
Water-resistant to 100 metres, the SSC965 goes beyond the scope of a purely aesthetic chronograph. It can confidently accompany daily wear, travel and summer activities.
Fitted with a three-link stainless steel bracelet, it retains a versatile spirit: sporty by nature, yet sufficiently balanced to pair with more refined attire.
Solar calibre V192: performance without constraints
At the heart of the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC965 beats the V192 calibre, a manufacture solar quartz movement that perfectly embodies Seiko’s modern philosophy: precision, autonomy and ease of use.
Unlike a traditional mechanical chronograph, the V192 is powered by light—both natural and artificial. The dial captures energy and converts it into a power reserve, eliminating the need for battery replacement or manual winding.
When fully charged, the watch offers up to six months of autonomy in darkness—a major advantage for daily wear or for rotation within a collection.
The V192 calibre provides:
- Accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month
- Chronograph measurement up to 60 minutes
- 1/5th of a second precision
- A 24-hour counter
- A discreetly integrated date at 4:30
- Low charge indicator (jumping seconds hand)
This movement allows the Speedtimer to combine the charm of a vintage racing chronograph with the practicality of a contemporary watch that is always ready to perform.
This is precisely what makes the solar Speedtimer line so successful:
a strong neo-vintage aesthetic, without the maintenance constraints of a mechanical chronograph.
