Launched in 2022, the DEFY Skyline collection quickly established itself as the most contemporary expression of ZENITH’s DNA. A direct heir to the original DEFY of 1969, it revisits the codes of bold geometry and robustness, translating them into a resolutely modern language inspired by urban architecture and the sharp lines of contemporary metropolises. With the Skyline, ZENITH presents a vision of DEFY designed for the present, where design and mechanics are developed simultaneously as a coherent whole.

First introduced in chronograph form in 2024, the DEFY Skyline Chronograph marks the meeting point between the collection’s angular aesthetic and the Manufacture’s most emblematic complication: the high-frequency El Primero chronograph. This natural alliance makes the Skyline Chronograph a cornerstone of today’s DEFY collection, combining a strong visual identity with high-level watchmaking performance.

On the occasion of LVMH Watch Week 2026, ZENITH further reinforces the character of this model by unveiling a new version entirely crafted in black ceramic. More radical and more architectural, this iteration asserts the maturity of the DEFY Skyline Chronograph and fully embodies ZENITH’s urban and contemporary vision. A watch conceived as a modern horological structure, where precision, design, and innovation engage in perfect dialogue.

Black ceramic & architecture – A sculptural presence

With this DEFY Skyline Chronograph, ZENITH pushes the architectural language of the collection even further by opting for a construction entirely executed in black ceramic. Colored throughout, highly scratch-resistant, and durable over time, ceramic gives the watch a deep and uniform visual intensity, reinforcing its radical and decisively contemporary character.

The 42 mm case reprises the Skyline’s emblematic geometry: an octagonal middle case topped by a dodecagonal bezel, whose sharp facets are highlighted by a carefully balanced alternation of satin-brushed and polished surfaces. This interplay of finishes accentuates the sense of relief and gives the watch a truly sculptural dimension, evoking a monolithic architecture shaped by light and shadow.

The gradient grey dial extends this visual depth. Lighter at its center and gradually darkening toward the periphery, it is adorned with the engraved four-pointed star motif, a signature of the DEFY Skyline collection. The three chronograph counters, slightly recessed and finished with concentric snailing, enhance legibility while structuring the dial’s overall composition.

The faceted, rhodium-plated hands and indices, coated with Super-LumiNova, ensure optimal readability in all conditions. Subtle red accents punctuate the chronograph indications, adding a dynamic touch without disrupting the overall balance of the design. Discreetly integrated between 4 and 5 o’clock, the date blends seamlessly into the composition, faithful to the Skyline Chronograph’s functional and pared-down approach.

El Primero 3600 – The chronograph to the tenth of a second

At the heart of the DEFY Skyline Chronograph beats the in-house automatic El Primero 3600 caliber, the contemporary evolution of ZENITH’s legendary high-frequency chronograph. True to the Manufacture’s pioneering spirit, this movement stands out for its unique ability to measure and display one-tenth of a second with immediate legibility.

Operating at a high frequency of 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour), the El Primero 3600 drives the central chronograph hand through a full rotation every ten seconds, enabling a direct and intuitive reading of one-tenth of a second—where traditional chronographs are limited to one-second resolution. This chronometric performance is paired with a comfortable 60-hour power reserve, perfectly suited to everyday use.

Visible through a sapphire caseback, the movement reveals a refined and resolutely modern architecture. The column wheel, a hallmark of high-end chronographs, along with blued components, attests to ZENITH’s level of finishing and technical mastery. The caliber also incorporates a silicon escapement—escape wheel and lever—ensuring improved chronometric stability and enhanced resistance to magnetic fields, as well as a stop-seconds mechanism for precise time setting.

Versatility & comfort – Designed for everyday wear

Despite its assertive aesthetics and fully black ceramic construction, the DEFY Skyline Chronograph has been conceived as a watch perfectly suited to daily wear. Its robust case is equipped with a screw-down crown and guarantees water resistance to 10 ATM (100 meters), allowing for versatile use well beyond an urban setting.

The watch is delivered on an integrated two-link black ceramic bracelet that naturally extends the architectural lines of the case, offering an excellent balance between comfort and secure wear. ZENITH also includes an additional black patterned rubber strap, more supple and sportier, ideal for prolonged wear or more active situations.

Thanks to the tool-free quick-change strap system directly integrated into the case, switching from one strap to another takes just a few seconds—illustrating the DEFY Skyline philosophy: a contemporary watch designed to adapt to the varied rhythms and uses of modern life.
