The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC957P1 is a limited edition (4,000 pieces) tribute to the iconic Datsun 240Z. With its solar V192 movement, 1/5-second chronograph, 41.4mm steel case, and bi-color tachymeter bezel, it merges automotive heritage with watchmaking performance in a vivid design.
The Story
In 1969, two Japanese icons were born: the Seiko Speedtimer, one of the very first automatic chronographs in history, and the Datsun 240Z, a sports coupé that conquered the world with its sleek design and unbeatable performance-to-price ratio.
The Speedtimer represented a major breakthrough in watchmaking: it introduced an automatic chronograph equipped with a vertical clutch and column wheel, a technical achievement that ensured unprecedented accuracy in measuring elapsed time. Meanwhile, the Datsun 240Z redefined the concept of the accessible sports car, captivating both the Japanese and North American markets.
The story of the two brands intertwined in 1971, when the Datsun 240Z No. 11, sponsored by Seiko, won the legendary East African Safari Rally. This grueling race, considered one of the toughest in the world, saw the 240Z triumph after more than 6,200 km of unforgiving terrain. This victory cemented a lasting bond between Seiko and Datsun, united by a shared pursuit of performance and reliability.
Today, more than half a century later, Seiko revives this historic chapter with a Datsun trilogy of three limited editions: the SPB517 (three-hand mechanical), the SRQ057 (high-end automatic chronograph), and the SSC957 (solar chronograph). The latter, limited to 4,000 pieces worldwide, embodies the perfect marriage of 1970s racing heritage and Seiko’s modern technology.
Design & Aesthetics
The SSC957 stands out with details directly inspired by the legendary Datsun 240Z. At 12 o’clock, the dial proudly displays the “DATSUN” logo in capital letters, faithfully reproducing the one engraved on the car’s steering wheel. The Arabic numerals on the dial and the tachymeter bezel are modeled after the typography of the 240Z’s dashboard, reinforcing the immersion into the automotive world.
The bi-color aluminum bezel with tachymeter scale draws inspiration from historic 1970s Speedtimer models. This vintage design, highly sought after by collectors, firmly roots the watch in the lineage of classic racing chronographs.
The stainless steel case measures 41.4 mm in diameter, 13 mm thick, and offers 100 meters of water resistance. Alternating brushed and polished finishes provide a refined yet sporty look.
The bracelet, also in steel, is distinguished by its central black links with a hardened coating, a nod to the dark hood of the Datsun 240Z. This detail creates an immediate visual connection between watch and car.
On the back, the screw-down caseback is decorated with an original engraving of the victorious Datsun 240Z, celebrating its legendary 1971 Safari Rally win. The “LIMITED EDITION” inscription and individual serial number reinforce the exclusivity of this 4,000-piece series.
Movement & Performance
Inside the SSC957 beats the Seiko solar caliber V192, engineered to combine precision, practicality, and reliability. This quartz movement charges via natural or artificial light and delivers up to 6 months of autonomy when fully charged. Overcharge protection ensures long-term battery durability.
Main features of the V192 caliber:
- Type: solar quartz (light-charged)
- Accuracy: ±15 seconds per month
- Power reserve: approx. 6 months on a full charge
- Complications:
- 1/5-second chronograph (up to 60 minutes)
- Split time function
- 24-hour counter at 3 o’clock
- Small seconds at 9 o’clock
- Subdial at 6 o’clock combining 60-minute chronograph counter and power reserve indicator
- Date display between 4 and 5 o’clock
Operation is smooth and intuitive: the slim central chronograph hand advances in 1/5-second increments, ensuring a dynamic and precise reading of elapsed time. The power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock allows you to check the energy level at a glance.
This technology gives the SSC957 the robustness needed for everyday use, free from winding or battery replacement, while staying true to the Speedtimer DNA: a sports chronograph built for accuracy.
Limited Edition & Positioning
The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC957P1 is part of an exclusive trilogy celebrating the shared heritage of Seiko and the Datsun 240Z, two Japanese icons born in 1969. Alongside the SPB517 (mechanical three-hander) and the SRQ057 (high-end automatic chronograph), it represents the solar-powered tribute.
Each piece is individually numbered and engraved, affirming its exclusivity. Limited to 4,000 pieces worldwide, the SSC957 appeals both to Seiko enthusiasts and to classic car lovers, drawn to the historical bond between watchmaking and motorsport.
The engraved caseback featuring the victorious Datsun 240Z at the 1971 Safari Rally is a reminder of the legendary achievement that united Seiko and Datsun. More than just a watch, it is a historical testament, a piece that tells the story of a memorable victory.
