With the Carrera Astronomer, TAG Heuer introduces a new complication to its catalog: a high-precision moon phase display. Powered by the new automatic Calibre 7, this 39 mm steel watch exudes refined elegance and exceptional astronomical precision. Its sunray-brushed silver dial, enhanced by a sub-dial at 6 o'clock, perfectly reflects the balance and purity characteristic of the Carrera collection.
Carrera Astronomer: An unprecedented complication in the TAG Heuer universe
When it was launched in 1963 under the vision of Jack Heuer, the Carrera represented a revolution: a chronograph designed for readability and functionality, made for drivers as well as enthusiasts of modern design. Since then, it has remained one of TAG Heuer’s pillars, a symbol of uncompromising sporty elegance.
In 2025, on the occasion of the Geneva Watch Days, the Carrera takes a new step forward with the introduction of the Astronomer. For the first time, the Swiss Maison equips its emblematic collection with a moonphase complication, opening up to a more poetic and contemplative register. By choosing to combine the rational spirit of the Carrera with celestial imagination, TAG Heuer once again demonstrates its ability to merge heritage and innovation.
A design inspired by the stars, faithful to Carrera DNA
The Carrera Astronomer uses the 39 mm stainless steel case of the “pre-Glassbox” Carrera, with clean lines and elongated lugs. It stands out with a sunray-brushed silver dial, surrounded by a contrasting minute track, and above all by a construction in three levels:
- an accentuated outer flange,
- a radiant middle section,
- and finally the inner zone, dedicated to the lunar display.
Contrary to the traditional romantic vision of the moon in a starry sky, TAG Heuer opts for a quasi-scientific approach. On the central disc are depicted the seven main phases of the lunar cycle, along with markers for each of the 29.5 days in the full cycle. A double-tipped hand acts as a pointer, advancing every day at 1 a.m., simultaneously indicating both the phase and the day of the cycle.
The result is a functional, clear, and unprecedented display that allows for an accurate and educational reading of the Moon’s state.
On the back, a closed steel caseback features a laser engraving of an astronomical observatory — a nod to the celestial vocation of this model and a way for TAG Heuer to contrast it with the open backs of its Carrera chronographs.
The watch is powered by the new automatic Calibre 7, offering a 50-hour power reserve.
A unique aesthetic execution
The WBX2110.BA0044 is the only non-limited model of the Astronomer collection. It adopts a monochrome identity, playing with black and silver tones, with applied Arabic numerals coated with Super-LumiNova®. This sober yet technical execution enhances dial legibility while strengthening its contemporary character.
The seven-link steel bracelet completes the ensemble, with a secure folding clasp ensuring both comfort and robustness. This design makes the steel Astronomer a versatile watch — more rational than its limited sisters, but just as intriguing.
What we think
Let’s be clear: this Carrera Astronomer is one of TAG Heuer’s most unexpected launches! The Carrera, always associated with motor racing and bold chronographs, now ventures onto an almost academic terrain: the scientific reading of the Moon’s phases. And that is precisely what makes it fascinating.
Where many moonphases settle for a stylized crescent in a decorative starry sky, TAG Heuer chooses rigor: a dial that truly allows you to read the lunar cycle in its entirety, day after day. An approach that won’t necessarily appeal to everyone — some will see it as too didactic — but one that embraces its difference with confidence.
This singularity directly echoes the Heuer Solunar of the 1950s, which displayed tides according to lunar cycles. The lineage is clear: TAG Heuer today revives this idea of a “pedagogical” dial, but this time applied to the Moon itself.
Ultimately, the WBX2110.BA0044, with its monochrome steel design and atypical display, may be one of the most “out-of-the-box” Carreras in years. It illustrates TAG Heuer’s welcome willingness to take risks, explore new territories, and surprise a clientele sometimes too accustomed to classic codes.
