Combining high performance and cutting-edge technology, the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport heralds a new era for TAG Heuer. Limited to just 50 pieces, this exceptional timepiece combines the TH-Carbonspring balance spring—designed and produced by the Manufacture—with a COSC-certified flying tourbillon, all housed in a 44 mm forged carbon case designed for extreme conditions.
The Spirit of Carrera: Speed as a Horizon
In 1963, Jack Heuer created one of the most iconic chronographs in history: the Carrera. His ambition? To design a watch for racing drivers, legible at a glance and adapted to the extreme conditions of the track. Its name paid tribute to the legendary Carrera Panamericana, one of the most dangerous and celebrated motor races of the 1950s in Mexico.
From its very beginnings, the Carrera stood out with its clean, functional design: a wide, uncluttered dial with perfectly readable scales, combined with ergonomics designed for performance. In the paddocks and behind the wheel, it became the ideal tool for drivers, embodying the spirit of speed and precision that has always driven TAG Heuer.
Over the decades, the Carrera established itself as a timeless icon: a symbol of the alliance between modern aesthetics and sporting functionality. Worn by legendary drivers and constantly reinterpreted, it remains the benchmark chronograph for all those who associate watchmaking precision with the adrenaline of racing.
With the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport TH-Carbonspring, TAG Heuer projects this heritage into the future. More than just a chronograph, it represents the union of the rigor of motorsport and the daring of haute horlogerie, by integrating for the very first time a carbon hairspring into a COSC-certified tourbillon movement.
The TH-Carbonspring: Mechanical Avant-Garde
The year 2025 marks a turning point for TAG Heuer with the arrival of the TH-Carbonspring, a watchmaking innovation that reinvents the beating heart of the mechanical watch. Developed within the TAG Heuer Institute and entirely designed and produced by the Manufacture, this hairspring is the result of more than ten years of intensive research and development.
Traditionally made from metal alloys, and more recently silicon, the hairspring regulates the oscillations of the balance wheel. It directly determines the precision and reliability of the movement. Any advance in this field therefore represents a major breakthrough for the watch industry.
The choice of carbon represents a true rupture. This high-tech material combines lightness, strength, and stability. Compared to traditional alloys, which are sensitive to thermal variations, and silicon, which is efficient but sometimes fragile when subjected to shocks, the TH-Carbonspring stands out thanks to:
- Thermal stability and lightness that reduce the inertia of the hairspring, ensuring timekeeping regularity in all conditions.
- Enhanced immunity to magnetic fields, the invisible enemy of mechanical precision.
- Greater shock resistance, offering superior durability in both daily wear and sporting use.
- Optimized longevity, delivering stable performance across decades.
These strengths make the TH-Carbonspring a third technological path after metal alloys and silicon, opening a new era for mechanical movements.
Invisible to most eyes, the hairspring is nonetheless the heart of the watch. By reinventing this fundamental organ, TAG Heuer has not signed a mere improvement but a true scientific and watchmaking revolution. It is a breakthrough that redefines the standards of precision and reliability for decades to come.
Proof of its importance, TAG Heuer has chosen to introduce the TH-Carbonspring in two flagship models:
- The Monaco Flyback Chronograph CBL5190.FT6313, a historic icon that becomes the laboratory of forward-looking watchmaking.
- The Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport TH-Carbonspring, the ultimate expression of performance, featuring a COSC-certified flying tourbillon.
In these two creations, each limited to 50 pieces, the carbon hairspring does more than power a movement: it transforms these watches into technological manifestos, symbols of TAG Heuer’s avant-garde spirit.
The Heuer TH20-61 COSC Flying Tourbillon Calibre
At the heart of the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport beats the Calibre Heuer 02T, an integrated chronograph movement that combines high performance with haute horlogerie. Entirely developed and assembled by the TAG Heuer Manufacture, it embodies the brand’s pioneering spirit: the audacity to bring prestigious complications to watches designed for sport and extreme conditions.
A Modern and Robust Architecture
- Integrated chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch, ensuring crisp and precise operation of the functions.
- 65-hour power reserve, offering comfortable autonomy despite the complexity of the tourbillon.
- COSC certification, a guarantee of chronometric precision rarely associated with a movement equipped with a tourbillon.
The Flying Tourbillon
The tourbillon is one of watchmaking’s most spectacular complications, designed to counteract the effects of gravity on the regulating organ. Here, TAG Heuer presents a flying tourbillon, suspended without an upper bridge, creating an impression of lightness and depth. Positioned at 6 o’clock, it naturally draws the eye and showcases the TH-Carbonspring hairspring, integrated for the very first time into such an architecture.
The combination of a carbon hairspring and a COSC-certified tourbillon makes this Carrera a true first in watchmaking history. By uniting the technical sophistication of the tourbillon with the robustness and enhanced precision of the TH-Carbonspring, TAG Heuer has created a radical and avant-garde timepiece, destined to captivate the most discerning collectors.
A Radical and Sporty Design
Designed to combine robustness and refinement, the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport TH-Carbonspring asserts itself as a radical watch, built to withstand the most intense conditions while expressing the sophistication of haute horlogerie.
Crafted from black forged carbon, the 44 mm case stands out for its lightness, strength, and unique veining formed during the fiber compression process. Each watch is therefore unique, with random patterns that reinforce its exclusive character. Its robust profile and 100-meter water resistance confirm its sporting and extreme vocation.
The dial, worked in an ultra-contemporary spirit, reveals the organs of the movement while highlighting the flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock. The contrasting registers ensure perfect readability, while the luminous indexes and hands guarantee optimal legibility day or night. The open architecture also reveals the TH-Carbonspring hairspring, the true technological signature of this edition.
The textured black rubber strap, designed for comfort and durability, completes the watch’s aesthetic. The overall impression is one of power and radical modernity, perfectly in line with the Extreme Sport spirit from which it takes its name.
