Everything you need to know about Grand Seiko watches
The history of Grand Seiko began in Japan in 1960, with the ambition of creating the ideal watch by combining precision, durability, legibility and beauty. In 1967, the 44GS established the aesthetic principles that continue to define the Grand Seiko Style today. Since then, the Manufacture has pursued a constant quest for perfection through mechanical, Spring Drive and quartz watches crafted by highly skilled artisans in its specialised Japanese studios.
Although Grand Seiko was born from Seiko’s watchmaking expertise, the two brands now offer distinct identities and positioning. Grand Seiko represents the highest expression of Japanese watchmaking, with dedicated collections, Manufacture calibres and exacting finishing standards. Grand Seiko watches are notably distinguished by their intricately crafted dials, high-precision movements, Zaratsu-polished cases and extensive hand-finishing carried out in specialised workshops in Japan.
Choosing a Grand Seiko watch means choosing a Japanese timepiece that combines precision, legibility, reliability and exceptional finishing. The Manufacture is renowned for its dials inspired by Japanese nature and the changing seasons, its cases featuring perfectly polished surfaces and its movements developed in-house. Grand Seiko also offers three complementary movement technologies: 9S mechanical calibres, 9R Spring Drive movements and 9F quartz calibres.
The main Grand Seiko collections include Evolution 9, which reinterprets the Manufacture’s aesthetic principles through a contemporary design, and the Heritage collection, inspired by historic creations such as the 44GS and 62GS. The Elegance collection favours refined lines and sophisticated proportions, while the Sport collection includes robust GMT watches, diving watches and chronographs.
Grand Seiko Spring Drive is a unique movement powered by a mainspring, like a traditional mechanical watch, but regulated electronically through the Tri-Synchro Regulator. It operates without a battery and combines the torque and autonomy of a mechanical movement with a level of precision close to that of quartz. The absence of a traditional escapement allows the seconds hand to glide smoothly and silently across the dial, expressing the natural and continuous flow of time.
A mechanical Grand Seiko watch is powered by a manually wound or automatic 9S calibre, with selected models featuring a high-frequency Hi-Beat movement. A Spring Drive watch is also powered by a mainspring but replaces the traditional escapement with an exceptionally precise electromagnetic regulation system. Grand Seiko quartz watches use hand-assembled 9F calibres, many of which achieve an accuracy of approximately ±10 seconds per year.
Grand Seiko dials frequently draw inspiration from the landscapes, light and seasons of Japan. Snow, white birch bark, flowers, frozen lakes and mountain scenery are interpreted through finely crafted textures and subtle colours. Zaratsu polishing enhances this aesthetic by creating perfectly smooth, distortion-free mirror surfaces. Combined with contrasting brushed finishes, faceted hour markers and polished hands, this technique produces the distinctive interplay of light and shadow associated with the Grand Seiko Style.
A Grand Seiko watch purchased from an authorised retailer is covered by a five-year worldwide Grand Seiko warranty, in accordance with the conditions established by the Manufacture. It notably covers eligible defects affecting the movement, case and metallic bracelet components when the watch is used normally and in accordance with its instructions. The properly completed warranty certificate must be presented when requesting assistance from an authorised retailer or service centre.
