With its “Rouleaux”-style rubber strap and highly legible “panda” dial, the Chronomat B01 42 White exudes a sportier personality while retaining the signature elegance of the Breitling collection.
The legacy of the Chronomat
The story of the modern Chronomat began during one of the most turbulent periods in Swiss watchmaking history. In the early 1980s, as the quartz crisis deeply disrupted the industry and pushed many brands to abandon mechanical movements, Breitling made the bold decision to return to a strong mechanical chronograph. A counter-current choice that would play a major role in the rebirth of the manufacture.
It was in this spirit that the Chronomat of 1984 was born, developed in collaboration with the prestigious Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori. Breitling envisioned a watch capable of meeting the demands of military pilots: perfect legibility, robustness, ergonomics, and professional functionality. But the Chronomat was not limited to the cockpit. From its launch, it also stood out thanks to its unique style, combining sporty power with bold elegance.
Its rider-tab bezel, originally designed to facilitate handling while wearing pilot gloves, quickly became one of Breitling’s most recognizable aesthetic signatures. The Rouleaux bracelet — supple, comfortable, and instantly identifiable — also played a key role in shaping the identity of the collection. This distinctive combination allowed the Chronomat to quickly transcend the world of aviation and become a true icon of 1980s and 1990s luxury sports watches.
Over the decades, the Chronomat became part of international popular culture. Seen on the wrists of personalities such as Jean-Paul Belmondo and Gordon Ramsay, as well as in cult American TV series like Friends and Seinfeld, it came to embody a certain vision of the sports chronograph: powerful, versatile, and unmistakably Breitling. Its influence even extended beyond the West, becoming a reference within Japanese pop culture, notably through the manga Kaiji.
When Breitling deeply revived the collection in 2020 with the return of the Rouleaux bracelet and design codes inspired by historical models, the brand laid the foundations for this new 2026 generation. The current Chronomat B01 42 therefore does not seek to break away from its past. Instead, it refines all its fundamentals: modernized proportions, a more fluid design, a fully integrated bracelet, and significantly improved comfort.
More than a simple aesthetic evolution, this new Chronomat perpetuates the original spirit of the model: a mechanical watch designed for action, built to last, and capable of accompanying both sporting activities and a more elegant daily lifestyle.
A completely redesigned design
With this 2026 generation, Breitling evolves the Chronomat with subtlety, never betraying its identity. The goal was not to radically transform the model, but rather to improve every proportion in order to reinforce its elegance, fluidity, and daily comfort. An approach perfectly summarized by Pablo Widmer, Head of Design at Breitling, who described the objective as “refining its streamlined character.”
The first major evolution concerns the Rouleaux bracelet, now fully integrated into the case. Whereas previous generations adopted a more traditional semi-integrated architecture, this new Chronomat presents a far more cohesive and contemporary silhouette. The lugs are now cleverly concealed beneath the case in order to preserve the ability to easily change straps while maintaining a more fluid and sophisticated aesthetic.
This new construction profoundly transforms the watch’s presence on the wrist. The profile gains in coherence, the silhouette appears more dynamic and modern, while comfort improves significantly thanks to extensive work on the proportions. The Chronomat B01 42 case thus sees its thickness reduced from 15.1 mm to only 13.77 mm, while the lug-to-lug measurement decreases to 45.8 mm. Particularly important evolutions for a sporty chronograph of this size, making it far more pleasant to wear on a daily basis.
Breitling has also reworked the Chronomat’s iconic bezel. Still instantly recognizable thanks to its famous rider tabs, it now adopts a much cleaner monobloc construction. Whereas the previous bezel was composed of numerous separate elements, the new generation integrates the ring, insert, and rider tabs into a simplified structure that feels visually smoother and more contemporary in execution.
The dial also benefits from this work of simplification. On the chronograph versions, the 1/100 scale previously displayed on the rehaut disappears in order to improve overall legibility and reinforce the purity of the design. The crown guards have also been reduced, further refining the case profile while improving crown handling.
The new integrated Rouleaux bracelet also plays a key role in this evolution. More fluid visually, it greatly improves the overall feeling of continuity and balance. Breitling additionally introduces a new patented micro-adjustment system hidden within the folding clasp, allowing the bracelet to be easily adjusted according to temperature variations or desired comfort throughout the day.
The result is a Chronomat that feels more balanced, refined, and contemporary, while preserving everything that has defined its character for more than forty years: a strong sporting presence, instantly recognizable identity, and unique versatility within the world of luxury chronographs.
The Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 Chronograph
At the heart of this Chronomat B01 42 beats one of the manufacture’s most emblematic movements: the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01. Introduced in 2009, this automatic chronograph movement has gradually established itself as a true reference within Breitling thanks to its robustness, precision, and proven reliability.
Certified as a chronometer by the COSC, the Breitling 01 offers approximately 70 hours of power reserve and features a high-end architecture designed for intensive daily use. Its column-wheel chronograph and vertical clutch ensure particularly smooth and precise operation while limiting mechanical wear during chronograph use.
Entirely designed and developed in-house by Breitling, this movement perfectly reflects the technical philosophy of the brand: to create high-precision instruments capable of combining professional performance with everyday usability. Visible through a screwed sapphire caseback, the caliber reveals a modern and refined construction, further reinforcing the premium character of this new Chronomat generation.
The Chronomat B01 42 also retains the functional qualities that have always defined the model. Its stainless steel case guarantees water resistance up to 200 meters, while its domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides ensures excellent readability in all conditions. Applied indexes and hands coated with Super-LumiNova® further reinforce its vocation as a true high-end sports tool watch.
With this new generation, Breitling does not seek to revolutionize the Chronomat’s mechanics, but rather to further highlight the qualities of its manufacture caliber through a more ergonomic, fluid, and balanced case. The result is a chronograph that is simultaneously powerful, refined, and exceptionally comfortable to wear every day.
The White Panda dial: the spirit of the original Chronomat
With its contrasting black subdials and highly legible white dial, the White Panda version is probably the closest to the historical spirit of the Chronomat. Its instrument-inspired aesthetic directly evokes the pilot chronographs of the 1980s while benefiting from the more contemporary elegance of this new generation. Sporty, timeless, and extremely balanced, it perfectly embodies Breitling’s DNA in its most emblematic form.
