Futuristic, ultra-technical, and spectacular on the wrist, the Zenith Defy El Primero 21 pushes the boundaries of mechanical timekeeping. With its chronograph capable of measuring 1/100th of a second, its open architecture, and its iconic high-frequency movement, this watch embodies the avant-garde watchmaking of the Le Locle manufacture.

The Story

To understand the Zenith Defy El Primero 21, it is necessary to return to one of the most important moments in modern watchmaking history. In 1969, Zenith unveiled the El Primero calibre, widely considered one of the first integrated automatic chronograph movements ever produced in series. Beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, this high-frequency movement made it possible to measure time to one-tenth of a second — an exceptional performance for the era.

The El Primero quickly established itself as an absolute reference within the industry. Its precision and robustness made it one of the most respected chronograph movements ever designed, to the point that it would be used by several prestigious manufactures over the following decades.

Yet Zenith never simply preserved this heritage. The manufacture from Le Locle has consistently pushed the limits of high-frequency watchmaking. In 2017, the brand introduced the Defy El Primero 21, a radically new watch representing a genuine technological breakthrough.

To achieve an unprecedented level of precision, Zenith adopted a revolutionary architecture featuring two independent regulating organs. The first governs the time display at the historic El Primero frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, faithful to the original DNA of the movement. The second is dedicated entirely to the chronograph and oscillates at an extraordinary frequency of 360,000 vibrations per hour — 100 Hz — enabling measurement to 1/100th of a second.

This mechanical achievement results in a unique visual signature: when the chronograph is activated, the large central hand completes a full revolution of the dial in one second, spectacularly illustrating the extreme precision of the movement.

With the Defy El Primero 21, Zenith does more than pay tribute to its past. The manufacture demonstrates that it remains one of the most innovative houses in contemporary watchmaking, capable of evolving a historic icon into a new generation of ultra-high-performance chronographs.

The Model

The Zenith Defy El Primero 21 reference 49.9000.9004 immediately stands out with its resolutely contemporary design. True to the spirit of the Defy collection, it adopts an angular and technical aesthetic that highlights the mechanical architecture of the watch.

Its 44 mm black ceramic case gives the watch a strong wrist presence while offering excellent scratch resistance. The faceted bezel and sharp lines of the case reinforce its modern character, while the alternation of satin-brushed and polished surfaces adds depth to the overall design.

The dial features the openworked construction typical of the Defy collection. Part of the movement is visible, creating impressive visual depth and emphasizing the technical dimension of the watch. The chronograph counters, combined with a highly legible peripheral 1/100th-of-a-second scale, allow the indications to be read clearly despite the complexity of the dial.

Applied indexes and luminous hands ensure excellent readability, while touches of red add a sporty and dynamic character to the overall aesthetic.

The watch is fitted with a textured black rubber strap perfectly integrated into the case design. Flexible and comfortable, it is secured by a titanium folding clasp with DLC coating, ensuring both security and stability on the wrist.

With its bold design, open architecture and black ceramic construction, the Defy El Primero 21 embodies a modern and spectacular vision of the high-performance chronograph.

The El Primero 9004 Calibre

At the heart of this Zenith Defy beats one of the most impressive chronograph movements in modern watchmaking: the manufacture calibre El Primero 9004.

The defining characteristic of the 9004 calibre lies in its dual regulating architecture, which Zenith describes as a “double chain” structure. In practice, the watch contains two movements in one:

  • a first system dedicated to timekeeping
  • a second system reserved exclusively for the high-frequency chronograph.

The timekeeping portion operates in the classic El Primero tradition, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) and offering approximately 50 hours of power reserve through its automatic winding system.

But the second system is what makes this movement truly spectacular. The chronograph features its own balance wheel, oscillating at 360,000 vibrations per hour (50 Hz) — ten times faster than a conventional mechanical movement. This extraordinary frequency enables the watch to measure time to 1/100th of a second, an extremely rare achievement in mechanical watchmaking.

To power this function, the chronograph uses its own independent barrel, manually wound via the crown. Once fully wound (approximately 25 turns of the crown), it provides around 50 minutes of autonomy for chronograph operation, indicated by the power reserve display visible on the dial.

The reading is spectacular:

  • the large central hand completes one full rotation in a single second, indicating hundredths of a second
  • the counter at 6 o’clock measures seconds
  • the counter at 3 o’clock totals 30 minutes
  • the running small seconds is positioned at 9 o’clock.

Zenith has also innovated in materials. Both balance springs are made from carbon composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes — a material that is extremely light, anti-magnetic and exceptionally stable.

Visible through both the open dial and the sapphire caseback, the El Primero 9004 calibre perfectly embodies Zenith’s philosophy: pushing the limits of high-frequency watchmaking and mechanical precision while offering a fascinating horological spectacle.
