A neo-vintage chronograph with a deep blue dial and contrasting counters, the Seiko SSB477 combines ideal proportions of 38 mm and a 8T63 mecaquartz movement for an accessible, accurate, and characterful chronograph experience.

The Spirit of the Range — Accessible Vintage Chronograph

With the SSB477, SSB479 and SSB481 references, Seiko delivers a modern interpretation of the vintage chronograph, designed to strike the perfect balance between style, proportions and accessibility.

Positioned below the €500 mark, these models follow a clear philosophy: offer a 1970s-inspired chronograph without the cost, maintenance or accuracy constraints of a traditional mechanical movement.

Their DNA rests on three core pillars:

  • Balanced proportions: 38 mm diameter, 45.1 mm lug-to-lug and 12.6 mm thickness — a neo-vintage format that suits most wrists.
  • An in-house 8T63 mecaquartz movement, combining quartz precision with the mechanical feel of a traditional chronograph.
  • A carefully executed retro aesthetic, featuring a tachymeter bezel, contrasting sub-dials and vintage-style typography.

Unlike many microbrands that rely on outsourced mecaquartz calibres to create affordable chronographs, Seiko develops its own 8T63 movement in-house.
In other words, the brand controls both the design and the mechanics.

These three references do not aim to reinvent the chronograph.
They offer a rational, coherent and well-executed formula: timeless style, modern ergonomics and everyday reliability.

The Case — “Just Right” Proportions, Between Vintage and Modern

One of the greatest strengths of the Seiko SSB477, SSB479 and SSB481 lies in their thoughtfully calibrated proportions.

With a 38 mm diameter, 12.6 mm thickness and 45.1 mm lug-to-lug measurement, these chronographs adopt a size that is neither too large nor too compact.
It is an ideal balance that recalls 1970s chronographs while remaining perfectly contemporary on the wrist.

The stainless steel case features a fully satin-brushed finish, reinforcing its tool-watch character. This choice limits excessive shine, with polished accents reserved for:

  • the crown,
  • the pushers,
  • and the bezel ring,

creating a subtle visual contrast.

A fixed tachymeter bezel frames the dial, adding a distinct racing dimension. White markings against a matching background ensure excellent legibility while maintaining a vintage spirit.

The whole is protected by a box-shaped Hardlex crystal, a direct nod to the plexiglass crystals of classic chronographs. Its domed profile adds visual depth and enhances the retro appeal.

With 50 meters of water resistance, these chronographs are built for everyday wear while remaining true to their primary purpose: a style-driven chronograph, not a dive watch.

Finally, the 20 mm lug width allows for easy customization — racing leather, vintage NATO or perforated rubber straps all suit the watch perfectly.

The Dial — Vintage Panda Spirit, Three Personalities

While the case is shared across all three references, the dial is what defines each model’s personality.

The SSB477, SSB479 and SSB481 share the same layout:

  • Three sub-dials positioned at 9 o’clock (chronograph minutes), 6 o’clock (small seconds) and 3 o’clock (24-hour indicator)
  • A peripheral railroad minute track
  • A matching tachymeter bezel
  • A discreet date at 4:30, integrated via a black disc with white numerals

The matte dial finish enhances the tool-watch aesthetic while minimizing reflections. Contrasting sub-dials create a subtle “panda” effect that strengthens both legibility and vintage inspiration.

Each reference, however, interprets this foundation differently.

SSB477 — Modern Blue

The SSB477 features a deep matte blue dial paired with crisp white sub-dials.

It is the most contemporary version of the trio. The contrast is bold and dynamic, almost nautical in character. Metallic hands and markers retain a classic steel tone, reinforcing overall versatility.

This is the choice for those seeking a chronograph that feels modern yet rooted in retro design codes.

The 8T63 Movement — Mecaquartz Technology

At the heart of the Seiko SSB477, SSB479 and SSB481 beats the Seiko 8T63, an in-house mecaquartz calibre.

This is where the true intelligence of the range lies.

What is a mecaquartz movement?

A mecaquartz combines:

  • Quartz precision for timekeeping
  • A mechanically actuated chronograph module

In practical terms:

  • The time is regulated by a quartz oscillator (accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month)
  • The chronograph features a mechanical hammer system for instant reset

The result:
The chronograph hand snaps back to zero instantly and decisively, rather than gliding back slowly like a standard quartz chronograph.

This tactile feedback makes a real difference in user experience.

The 8T63 offers:

  • Hours and minutes
  • Small seconds at 6 o’clock
  • 60-minute chronograph
  • 24-hour indicator at 3 o’clock
  • Date at 4:30

The Bracelet — Vintage Sport Spirit with Modern Versatility

The Seiko SSB477, SSB479 and SSB481 are fitted with a stainless steel bracelet inspired by the Jubilee style, reinterpreted with a sportier edge.

It features:

  • Polished central links
  • Satin-brushed outer links
  • A three-fold clasp with push-button release

The overall execution remains consistent with the tool-watch spirit of the case: limited polished surfaces, a dominant satin finish and a discreet yet quality presence on the wrist.

The polished/brushed contrast is intentionally restrained in order to preserve the vintage aesthetic.

The opinion of the Lepage team
The SSB477 is probably the most versatile of the trio. Its matte blue dial paired with white subdials offers a modern contrast while retaining a true 70s inspiration. The proportions are excellent (38 mm / 45.1 mm LTL), making it wearable on almost any wrist. The 8T63 mecaquartz movement combines the precision of quartz with the mechanical feel of a chronograph push-button. At less than €500, it is a rational, balanced chronograph with impeccable taste.
