Originally conceived as a tribute to the legendary “Quartz Diver” of the 1980s, the SKX now enters a new era—firmly rooted in contemporary urban culture. With the revival of the SKX Midsize after 2023, Seiko 5 Sports introduces refined interpretations perfectly aligned with today’s aesthetic codes.

Drawing inspiration from the highly acclaimed SKX models of the 1990s—icons since 1996—the SRPL79K1 extends a design language that spans more than five decades of Seiko watchmaking history. A bold unidirectional bezel, generously luminescent markers and the signature crown positioned at 4 o’clock: the foundational elements remain intact.

Now offered in a compact 38 mm format, the watch feels more versatile, more contemporary and ideally suited to modern lifestyles. A carefully executed evolution that preserves the original utilitarian spirit while asserting a more urban presence.

Design & wrist presence

With the SRPL79K1, Seiko explores a more contrasted and sophisticated aesthetic. Its monochrome grey dial, paired with a deep grey bezel, evokes the subtle tones of faded black denim—directly inspired by contemporary streetwear culture.

Gold-toned accents applied to the hands and indexes subtly warm the composition. Designed to echo urban accessories—chains, rings or bracelets—they introduce a refined touch of elegance without ever becoming ostentatious.

The 38 mm stainless steel case strikes an ideal balance: compact enough for everyday comfort, yet retaining a confident sporty presence on the wrist. The crown positioned at 4 o’clock—an enduring Seiko 5 Sports signature—enhances ergonomics while reinforcing the model’s visual identity.

Indexes and hands are treated with LumiBrite, ensuring excellent legibility in low-light conditions. Protected by a Hardlex crystal and water-resistant to 100 meters (10 bar), the SRPL79K1 remains faithful to the robust and functional spirit of the SKX lineage.

Movement & performance

At the heart of the Seiko 5 Sports SRPL79K1 beats the in-house Seiko 4R36 calibre, an automatic movement renowned for its robustness and proven reliability.

Developed and assembled internally by Seiko, it operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and features 24 jewels. It offers a power reserve of approximately 40 hours—perfectly suited for daily wear without constraint.

The 4R36 also includes:

• Automatic winding via rotor
• Manual winding capability
• Stop-seconds (hacking) function for precise time-setting
• Day-date display at 3 o’clock

Visible through the transparent caseback, this movement reflects Japanese industrial expertise: reliable, durable and engineered for long-term performance.
