Seiko 5 Sports SRPL55: a mechanical SNXS icon with a sunray blue dial, elegant, versatile, and ready to accompany you every day.
Seiko 5 DNA: the SNXS series, the ultimate everyday watch
Since the 1960s, Seiko 5 has established itself as one of the most credible gateways into the world of everyday mechanical watches: a timepiece designed to be worn daily—reliable, straightforward and built to last. The SNXS series captures that exact “EDC” (everyday carry) spirit: a compact format, clear legibility, and genuine wrist versatility—without overplaying the “toolwatch” angle.
With this SNXS, Seiko takes the philosophy further in an even more accomplished version: the unmistakable SNXS silhouette with its very seventies charm (and that naturally protected crown at 4 o’clock) remains, but it is paired with modern upgrades that truly matter in real life. First, water resistance is now rated to 10 bar / 100 m, turning the watch into a true no-stress daily companion (active life, holidays, rain, even swimming).
Next comes a particularly well-judged set of dimensions: 37.4 mm in diameter, 12.5 mm thick, and 44.7 mm lug-to-lug—exactly the kind of footprint that works on a huge range of wrists, with a clear presence that never feels oversized.
Finally, the SRPL55 delivers what you expect from a modern Seiko 5: a screw-down exhibition caseback, improved low-light legibility thanks to LumiBrite, a steel bracelet built for everyday wear, and a true Seiko mechanical heart (covered in the movement section below).
And in this SRPL55K1 configuration, Seiko adds a strong visual signature: a blue dial that instantly gives the SNXS a more “sport-chic” attitude, without losing the line’s accessible DNA.
SRPL55: a 70s-inspired blue dial, between sport and elegance
The Seiko 5 Sports SNXS draws you in first with its deep blue dial, animated by a subtly sunburst finish that reacts beautifully to the light. Depending on the angle, the blue shifts between an intense marine tone and more electric reflections, giving the watch real visual energy.
Here you find the core SNXS DNA of the 1970s:
- Applied baton indexes, clean and well proportioned
- Faceted hands, broad and highly legible
- An orange central seconds hand, an intentional nod to vintage Seiko 5s
- A contrasting minute track on the chapter ring, structuring the dial visually
This contrast between the blue centre and the lighter chapter ring adds depth and modernises the overall reading. The day/date display at 3 o’clock—an historic Seiko 5 signature—keeps its practical role without throwing off the balance.
LumiBrite on the indexes and hands ensures effective readability in low-light conditions.
A compact, versatile case true to the SNXS spirit
The Seiko 5 Sports keeps the emblematic proportions of the SNXS series, modernised in 2024.
Its 37.4 mm stainless steel case strikes a near-perfect balance: compact enough to echo the watches of the 1970s, while still feeling entirely current on the wrist. With an approximate thickness of 12.5 mm and a restrained lug-to-lug length (44.7 mm), the watch sits naturally without any bulky effect.
The silhouette retains that slightly tonneau-shaped, organic profile, featuring:
- a polished fixed bezel that subtly catches the light
- a predominantly brushed case middle, more resistant to everyday micro-scratches
- a recessed crown at 4 o’clock, a historic Seiko 5 signature
This 4 o’clock crown is not just a design detail: it noticeably improves comfort on the wrist—especially on slimmer wrists—by avoiding any digging into the hand.
Another major evolution versus older SNXS generations:
water resistance is now rated to 100 metres.
This shifts the watch from a simple urban piece to a truly versatile one, able to handle swimming, holidays and summer use without worry.
Everything is protected by a slightly domed Hardlex crystal, consistent with Seiko’s approach at this price point: robust, coherent with the positioning, and visually in tune with the vintage-inspired aesthetic.
Redesigned steel bracelet: stronger, more coherent
This Seiko comes fitted with a three-link stainless steel bracelet, fully redesigned with the SNXS update.
More solid than previous generations, it offers:
- a better “in-hand” quality feel
- stronger aesthetic coherence with the case lines
- a triple-fold deployant clasp with push-button release for added security
With an 18 mm lug width, the watch remains very easy to personalise: vintage leather, NATO, Milanese mesh… it’s perfectly suited to switching styles.
The result: a compact, comfortable and highly versatile package—built as a true “Everyday Carry” watch.
Calibre 4R36: the reliable mechanical heart of Seiko 5
Inside the Seiko 5 Sports SRPL55 sits the in-house calibre 4R36, one of the most proven automatic movements from the Japanese manufacture.
This movement perfectly reflects the Seiko 5 philosophy: accessible mechanics, robust engineering, and long-term reliability.
It delivers:
- Bi-directional automatic winding
- Hacking (stop-seconds) for precise time setting
- Hand-winding capability
- Day/date display at 3 o’clock
- Approx. 41 hours of power reserve
- 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz)
Compared to the older 7S26 calibres found in the first SNXS generations, the 4R36 brings a genuinely modern day-to-day experience thanks to hacking and hand-winding.
Within the Seiko 5 universe, the priority remains functionality and durability.
And in that respect, the 4R36 does exactly what it should.
The movement is visible through a transparent caseback—an appreciated touch for enthusiasts and a great educational detail for those discovering mechanical watchmaking.
