Piaget Polo Date Automatic 42 mm Full Set
- NEW
The Piaget Polo Date 42 mm embodies another idea of sporty luxury. A watch with character, designed by Piaget for those who prefer understated elegance to overhyped icons. A confident alternative, both sporty and refined, powered by a genuine manufacture movement and boasting a strong identity, far from the beaten track.
A brief history – from 1979 to today
The story of the Piaget Polo begins in 1979. At the time, Yves G. Piaget envisioned a watch radically different from traditional watchmaking codes: a true “bracelet watch,” sculpted in gold, where the case and bracelet formed a single, seamless entity. Inspired by the sport of polo and the relaxed elegance of the international jet set, the Piaget Polo quickly became a symbol of the chic, carefree luxury of the 1980s. More than a timepiece, it embodied a way of life.
Over the decades, the collection evolved without ever renouncing its DNA. In the 2000s, Piaget explored new, more sporty interpretations—most notably with the Polo FortyFive—while preserving the founding idea of an elegant watch designed to accompany everyday life rather than conform to rigid watchmaking formalism.
In 2016, Piaget made a major strategic shift with the launch of the Piaget Polo S. For the first time, the Polo was offered in steel and adopted the contemporary codes of the sport-chic watch: generous proportions, alternating polished and satin-brushed finishes, and above all a “shape within a shape” architecture, with a cushion-shaped dial set inside a round case. The objective was clear: to offer a credible and legitimate alternative to the great luxury sports watches, while asserting a distinct identity true to the Piaget spirit.
Today, the Piaget Polo Date fits squarely within this continuity. Clean, balanced and powered by a finely decorated manufacture movement, it fully embraces its status as an elegant outsider. A watch for those who know the history, appreciate high watchmaking, and deliberately choose a more personal path than that of ubiquitous icons.
The model
The Piaget Polo Date 42 mm immediately asserts its identity as a contemporary sport-chic watch, while cultivating a highly controlled elegance. Its design is based on a principle dear to Piaget: the “shape within a shape.” The dial adopts a cushion silhouette with softened angles, perfectly integrated into a round 42 mm steel case, creating a subtle visual tension between geometry and fluidity.
The proportions are particularly well balanced. With a restrained thickness of approximately 9.4 mm, the Polo Date retains remarkable slimness for an automatic sports watch, allowing it to slip naturally under a shirt cuff while maintaining a strong presence on the wrist. The case finishes fully contribute to this perception of quality: the bezel is distinguished by a highly graphic horizontal satin finish—an immediate signature of the model—while the case flanks are vertically satin-brushed and highlighted by broad polished bevels that elegantly catch the light.
The dial, animated by fine horizontal grooves, echoes the heritage of the original Polo while expressing it in a modern language. The applied indexes and faceted hands ensure excellent legibility, enhanced by discreet use of luminous material. At 6 o’clock, the trapezoidal date window integrates harmoniously into the overall design, becoming a genuine design element rather than a purely functional complication.
The steel bracelet plays a central role in the watch’s aesthetic balance. Alternating polished and satin-brushed finishes, it naturally extends the lines of the case and reinforces the feeling of a watch conceived as a cohesive whole. Supple on the wrist and well articulated, it offers excellent everyday comfort and fully contributes to the Piaget Polo Date’s “relaxed chic” identity. Without seeking the radical integration of certain genre icons, it asserts a more elegant, more horological approach, faithful to the Maison’s DNA.
Ultimately, the Piaget Polo Date 42 mm succeeds in a delicate exercise: offering an elegant sports watch that is instantly recognisable, without ever resorting to ostentation or overly explicit references. A confident, refined and profoundly Piaget alternative.
The movement
At the heart of the Piaget Polo Date beats the manufacture calibre 1110P, an automatic movement that perfectly illustrates Piaget’s historic expertise in the field of ultra-thin calibres. True to the Maison’s DNA, this movement prioritises slimness without ever sacrificing reliability or mechanical performance.
With a thickness of approximately 4 mm, the calibre 1110P allows the Polo Date to maintain a particularly slender profile for a steel automatic sports watch. This slimness is not merely an aesthetic exercise: it directly contributes to wrist comfort and the model’s overall elegance, avoiding any visual or physical heaviness.
Technically, the movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of around 50 hours. It displays hours, minutes, central seconds and date, with precise time-setting thanks to the hacking seconds function. The entire construction is designed for reliable daily use, fully in keeping with a sport-chic watch intended to accompany its owner in all situations.
Visible through the sapphire caseback, the calibre 1110P reveals a carefully executed level of finishing, faithful to Piaget’s high watchmaking standards. The bridges and mainplate are decorated with circular Côtes de Genève and perlage, the screws are blued, and the edges meticulously finished. The rotor, adorned with the Piaget signature and circular graining, adds an extra touch of refinement and recalls the Maison’s expertise in designing movements that are as elegant as they are efficient.
Often underestimated in comparison with more heavily publicised calibres, the 1110P nevertheless stands out as an excellent modern automatic movement: slim, reliable, well finished and perfectly consistent with the philosophy of the Piaget Polo. It embodies a discreet approach to high watchmaking, where technical mastery serves style rather than demonstration.
