Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Turn-O-Graph Ref. 116264 automatic 36 mm 2004
Halfway between a dress watch and a sports watch, the Rolex Turn-O-Graph ref. 116264 is one of the Geneva-based watchmaker's least known models. And yet it is a marvel: a 36 mm Datejust, subtly transformed by its rotating bezel in white gold and signature touches of red, offering a rare, versatile and delightfully distinctive Rolex.
Background: a concise history of the Turn-O-Graph
The Turn-O-Graph debuted in 1953 under reference 6202. It is a pivotal model in Rolex history: the very first regular-production Rolex fitted with a 60-minute rotating bezel. The goal was not to create a purpose-built “tool watch” for a specific profession, but to give an Oyster Perpetual a simple, robust and everyday-useful elapsed-time function — a more discreet alternative to a chronograph. This timing bezel would later become one of Rolex’s major utilitarian signatures, directly influencing future Submariner and GMT-Master models.
Very quickly, the Turn-O-Graph was brought under the Datejust umbrella. It kept the line’s overall elegance while adding a unique sporty touch for Rolex: a bidirectional rotating bezel that allows the wearer to track up to one hour of elapsed time. This dress-sport balance would define the Turn-O-Graph’s identity for decades.
One episode would permanently shape its legend: in the 1950s, the Turn-O-Graph was adopted by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic team. Rolex supplied watches to certain pilots and even used the relationship in American advertising. This is where the nickname “Thunderbird” comes from — still widely used by collectors to describe Datejust models with a rotating bezel. The rare pieces bearing the Thunderbirds emblem on the dial are now true collector grails.
Reference 116264, introduced in 2004 for the Turn-O-Graph’s 50th anniversary, represents the final generation of the model. It retains the classic 36 mm Datejust diameter while refining the silhouette: more assertive lugs, a fluted white-gold bezel that remains rotating and graduated, and signature red accents on the seconds hand, date wheel and “TURN-O-GRAPH” printing. It is a true synthesis of Datejust elegance and the line’s historic timing-bezel spirit. Production ended in 2011, which only strengthens its status today as a discreet yet important Rolex chapter.
Though the Turn-O-Graph has sometimes lived in the shadow of Rolex’s more famous sports models, it remains a foundational creation: the watch that introduced the rotating bezel at Rolex and proved that a Datejust could become a tool watch — without losing its elegance.
A 36 mm Datejust “Turn-O-Graph”
This Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Turn-O-Graph ref. 116264 perfectly embodies the line’s hybrid spirit: a classically styled watch enhanced by a genuinely practical complication. The 36 mm Oyster case stays true to Datejust proportions, with a steel mid-case, polished flanks and water-resistance designed for everyday life. It is an intentionally balanced, very “historic Rolex” size that delivers instant elegance on the wrist without sacrificing presence.
The model’s visual signature lies in its bezel. Crafted in white gold, it reprises Rolex’s fluted motif, but here with a completely different purpose: it is rotating and graduated for 60 minutes. This construction gives the watch a unique personality within the Datejust family.
The black dial heightens the contrast between sobriety and sportiness. Its matte, extremely legible surface features applied baton indexes and crisp white-gold hands in pure Rolex style. Yet the Turn-O-Graph stands out through its red accents: the lacquered seconds hand and “TURN-O-GRAPH” text. These rare Rolex details energize the composition with a dynamic, immediately identifiable touch, while remaining perfectly controlled within the overall design.
The Oyster bracelet completes this sport-chic reading. Alternating finishes catch the light with precision. An outwardly timeless Datejust, subtly transformed by a rotating bezel and a strong red-and-black palette — an uncommon Rolex combination, and exactly what makes this Turn-O-Graph so endearing.
The watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 3135, an in-house automatic movement widely regarded as one of the brand’s most reliable. COSC-certified, it beats at 28,800 vibrations/hour, delivers just over 50 hours of power reserve, and features hacking seconds for precise setting.
