A French Story

Production of the Type 18 movement began in 1935, just before the outbreak of World War II. During the conflict, the company relocated first to central France, then further south to Valence. At the end of the war, LIP returned to Besançon and rebuilt its factory. It was there that the now-legendary “T18” emerged — a highly modern calibre featuring a small seconds subdial. In 1948, a full-gold model was even presented to Sir Winston Churchill as a gift.

The T18 would go on to be produced in several sizes and variations. But the C18 is truly a “happy accident” in LIP’s history — a kind of French “Bêtise de Cambrai” in watch form! In fact, the C18 was born from a designer’s error, resulting in a squared-off version of the T18 case. It retains the famous “Churchill” dial with its distinctive dual horizontal and vertical sunburst finish, along with the faceted hands that give its predecessor so much charm.
