A brief history

Jack Heuer was a businessman who led the family business to profitability after taking it over in 1962 at the age of 30. The models produced by Heuer during his first decade at the helm of the brand are now considered the greatest triumphs in the history of the chronograph: Monaco, Autavia, and Monza. And if there is one collection that best illustrates Heuer's approach to watchmaking, it is the Carrera collection.

First introduced in 1963, the Carrera model served as the basis for a new generation of Heuer wristwatches. Its rapid success gave the company the financial foundation it needed to continue its experiments in design and engineering. In 2007, TAG Heuer launched the Grand Carrera, a new prestigious avant-garde series inspired by its unique heritage in motor racing and characterized by unprecedented sophistication, performance, and precision: the chronographs are now powered by Calibre RS movements, which feature a unique display: the chronograph counters are equipped with rotating system indicators. A collection born out of passion!

TAG Heuer's Grand Carrera was a prestigious collection of highly sophisticated watches inspired by the spirit of modern GT cars. Launched in 2007, this watch line was innovative and contemporary when it first came out. It embodied the brand's unique connection to the world of motor racing and its passion for cutting-edge design and technology. Among its many exceptional features was the ingenious rotating system inspired by GT car engines, which replaced traditional hands with a disc displaying functional information even more clearly on the dial. TAG Heuer's award-winning Research & Development team had been working on the Grand Carrera project since 2005. The aim was not to replace the legendary Carrera, but to adapt it to new areas and technologies in watchmaking, bringing it closer to the style and performance of contemporary motorsport in general and GT cars in particular.

A unique, “full black” design

A radical version of the Grand Carrera, the CAV518B reference takes the line's aesthetic even further with a 43 mm case in Grade 2 titanium, treated with matte black DLC for a strong, ultra-contemporary presence. The surfaces alternate between different finishes, while the faceted lugs, a signature feature of the collection, naturally extend the line of the wrist. The slim tachymeter bezel maximizes the opening on the dial, highlighting the highly technical geometry of the piece.

The black dial reveals an ultra-sporty and refined aesthetic, with faceted black gold hour markers applied by hand, as are the TAG Heuer logo and the date window frame at 6 o'clock. The polished, luminescent black gold hands reinforce the contrast while preserving the chromatic unity of the whole.

The two rotating chronograph counters—minutes at 9 o'clock and small seconds at 3 o'clock—feature a Côtes de Genève decoration, visible screws, and polished-beveled finishes inspired by traditional watchmaking decoration techniques. The whole is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, ensuring readability and resistance in all conditions.

This “full black” version is mounted on a high-tech black alligator strap with a very pleasant soft feel, lined with bright red interior and highlighted by contrasting red stitching. It is equipped with a black steel folding clasp with safety pushers, adorned with the TAG Heuer logo, for a secure and elegant closure.

Finally, this watch is powered by the Calibre 17 RS automatic movement, visible through the sapphire crystal case back secured by six screws. This movement, certified as a “Chronometer” by the COSC, offers a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.
